"Up at the Late Night Moon"

"UP AT THE LATE NIGHT MOON"  is a line from the effervescently popular song "Your Mother's Dog" which became the name of this collection of songs. This record is a jam or like being at a house concert or party. What began as a get together of some people that had played together in some informal performances began to feel like it might be, a chance to record some new songs and recast some older songs in a new setting. We started out with "The Crawdad Song", a song that looms large in my personal history and has a good roll to it. I was hoping that we'd be able to get a vibe or a groove more than say a perfect take. I wanted more of a "field recording" kind of sound. I liked the combination of instruments as well as the country/folk and rock elements swirling around in the soup.  This was a no stress project. What I'm writing, trying to describe this experience, is more difficult than the recording, mixing, and the mastering of it was.

About Your Talk

Jeff Smith

About Your Talk

Your words come easy But you make it so hard To believe the stories You turn into art You get so tangled I your twisted plots Your motor's always running And you just can't stop

There's always someone You want to impress You think if it's worked once You've cast your nets And the ones your thought were fools Are lining up Even your entourage Has had enough

Everybody's talking' about your talk And the way you act like it's not your fault The way you rattle like a big dumb doll Everybody's talking about your talk

I used to laugh at it Like it was a bad joke But it kept getting worse Every word was an ego stroke Now you're so puffed up With your own deceit People avoid you just for relief

Everybody's talking' about your talk And the way you act like it's not your fault The way you rattle like a big dumb doll Everybody's talking about your talk

"The Human Wilderness"

This was recorded at BIAS Recording in Springfield Virginia. Rob Schnapf (Beck, Richard Thompson et al) did a lot of the basic tracks and Jim Robeson (Sweet Honey in the Rock, Taj Mahal et al) did overdubs. Jeff Juliano (Dan & Shay, Dave Matthews, Oar et al) mixed the tracks. The basic tracks were recorded in one late night session at Bias and the players were John Jennings, Rico Petrucelli,Rob Magruder and myself. Overdubs took place over the next couple of years whenever I could afford it. Jeff Juliano took the songs to California on vacation and played them for Acetate Records who liked the tracks enough to finace the mixing. I believe the quote was that they liked the album because "you could fight to it?" The song "You" has been used on the show The Young and Restless a half a dozen times and " I Never Wanted You To Go" has been used a several times and "Hideaway Rockin" was placed in a fight scene on the tv show "Army Wives".

"Livin' It Up", was produced by Norm Rowland. He moved to LA shortly after and my wife and I went on our delayed honeymoon trip to St Croix. The record was recorded in a week at Bias Recording in Springfield Virginia. All the players on this were friends and were also some of the busiest session musicians in the area, as well as being in the clubs at night. It was a great experience, and it was difficult and tense at times. Fortunately everybody else were pros and took everything in stride. I was in panic/flight mode but gradually calmed down. I had recorded some of these songs before with different arrangements and with different players and they served as the impetus (demos) to re-record them.

These particular songs were chosen by Norm and myself who also hired the musicians and ran the sessions with Bob Dawson at Bias. The record never came out. I always thought it was good. It was different in a lot of ways from the music that was current at the time but it also sounds of it's time and slightly outside of it.

The Players on this music were fabulous and helped bring this to be. I am forever grateful for their creative energies and talents.

John Jennings -guitar and b/u vocals
Rico Petrucelli -bass
Jon Carroll -keyboards, b/u vocals
Robbie McGruder -drumset
